WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers not to purchase and use Vigora, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, despite the Food and Drug Administration's earlier decision to ban its use. Vigora contains sildenafil, a similar medication to Viagra, which was withdrawn from the market in 1998 because of side effects such as heart attack and stroke. The FDA has also not approved the use of Vigora for a long time.

According to FDA, the side effects reported by many users of Vigora include:

  • Headache
  • Flushing
  • Indigestion
  • Runny nose
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness

Some of the users of Vigora also reported side effects such as:

  • Swelling of the ankles, feet, or hands
  • Sore throat
  • Skin rashes
  • Anxiety
  • Sweating

"It's not an FDA-approved use of Vigora, but there are serious side effects associated with it," said Janet Woodcock, M. D., director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "They can include severe headache, nausea, and stomach pain."

Though the FDA's decision to ban Vigora is still subject to appeal from U. S. and international regulatory bodies, the agency still intends to work with drug companies to address the safety issues.

In a letter to the FDA, John C. Smith, executive director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said the FDA's decision to ban Vigora will continue to be reviewed by the FDA's advisory panels. "We hope the FDA's decision will not affect other manufacturers or suppliers who have the right to market Vigora."

Viagra, another FDA-approved medication for erectile dysfunction, has been linked to cardiac events, and the FDA has not approved Viagra in the past.

According to a study published in the journal Urology, sildenafil-related erectile dysfunction patients experienced a 40% greater risk of developing erectile dysfunction than those who didn't take the medication. Researchers found that users of Viagra, which has not been approved by the FDA for a long time, experienced an 84% greater incidence of erectile dysfunction. The most common side effects were dizziness, headache, and flushing.

"It's not an FDA-approved use of Vigora, but there are serious side effects associated with it," said Woodcock. "The side effects reported by users of Viagra are very serious and can include severe headache, nausea, and heart attack. Patients should be aware that they may develop serious side effects if they use Viagra, including severe heart rhythm changes, including an irregular heartbeat."

Vigora is marketed by Pfizer and AstraZeneca. Vigora was withdrawn from the market in 1998 because of side effects such as heart attack and stroke.

In an article published in the December 2010 issue of the Journal of Urology, Woodcock wrote that "the FDA has not approved the use of Vigora for a long time. The safety and efficacy of Vigora have not been studied in patients with cardiovascular disease, and it is not currently approved for use in patients with erectile dysfunction."

In addition, the FDA has not approved Viagra in the past.

In an article published in the June 15, 2011, issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, Woodcock wrote that "Viagra is a prescription medication that has been approved for use in men with erectile dysfunction, and it has not been approved by the FDA for use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction."

As part of its decision to allow Vigora for a long time, the FDA has requested that Pfizer release a list of approved products and drug candidates for Viagra and to include safety information for Vigora in the labeling of Viagra. The FDA is not aware of any safety data for Vigora that has been submitted to the FDA.
